Vitamin D research that everyone should know about but few do!

by Roddy McDonald

Over recent years there has probably been more research carried out into the health benefits of Vitamin D than any other nutrient and the results that are being shown are indeed fascinating and enormously important to those of us who want to maintain high levels of wellness naturally. Unfortunately very little of this information gets into the mainstream media where it could make a huge difference to people suffering from ill health.

According to the Vitamin D council, a non profit organisation based in California, Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in the pathology of at least 17 varieties of cancer as well as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, depression, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, muscle wasting, birth defects, periodontal disease and more.

Technically Vitamin D is not a vitamin it is actually a hormone that targets over 10% of the genes in the human body. Hence any deficiency is going to have potentially major consequences.  Our best way to obtain adequate vitamin D is through sunlight exposure.   However the majority of us in the Northern parts of Europe definitely do not get enough sunlight.  Changes in our lifestyles has led to us spending less time outdoors and sadly that is particularly the case with children. We are also encouraged when we are in the sun to use sun blockers which inhibit the uptake of vitamin D. Of course if we are in the sunshine we should always ensure we do not burn.

How much Vitamin D do we need?

Historically the recommendation was to take 400iu of Vitamin D daily.  Recent research has demonstrated that this figure is woefully inadequate for most of us.  If you spend 20 to 30 minutes in full summer sun exposure your skin will produce 10,000iu – 25 times the recommended level.  Leading researchers in the field are recommending that as a guide for those getting little sun exposure that young children should take 1000iu, teenagers and young adults should take 2000iu and those over 40 should take 4,000iu.  However this will vary depending on your weight and other factors. If you are fighting cancer or heart disease then it is probable that your body is utilising high amounts of vitamin D. Also those with dark skins are particularly prone to vitamin D deficiency. There is useful information on the web site of www.vitamindcouncil.org particularly on testing your Vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D is believed to enhance uptake of nutrients from the small intestine and helps promote better body alkaline balance.  Its absorption is also dependent on certain other nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, vitamin K, boron and a small amount of Vitamin A.

We now stock the range of Vibrant Health’s Vitamin D3 products in sizes to suit everyone in the family. They are an inexpensive way to fortify your immunity, click here for further details.

Green Vibrance Powder, amongst its ingredients has 1,000iu of Vitamin D3 in it, as does Green Vibrance Junior.  The ingredients in Green Vibrance include all the necessary co-factors to help Vitamin D3 absorption.  We always recommend Green Vibrance powder as being our foundational health supplement combined of course with plenty of alkaline water. The combination helps to alkalise, oxygenate, nourish and gently detoxify the body.  Green Vibrance powder has over 60 ingredients in it including a very high probiotic content. Alkamax – for boosting body pH and helping provide additional magnesium.

One of the co factors necessary for Vitamin D absorption is magnesium. It is said that rising Vitamin D levels can exacerbate underlying magnesium deficiency.  We have not long introducedAlkamax, a very powerful product to help to balance body pH levels.  This blend of alkalising nutrients contains 400mg of magnesium which is ideal to help to boost your body’s magnesium levels at the same time as you focus on improving pH balance.  Alkamax is ideally taken once per day as a boost to reducing body tissue acidity.
