The term, being ‘Awake’ is quite commonly used now a days, I am sure you have heard it and hopefully regard yourself as being awake too.
Waking from Sleep, really caught my eye as I was curious as to what this particular title meant. Was it about what happens after you wake up after a long sleep, I initially thought, or was it just the sort of book I was after?
Yes, it’s a different term about being mentally ‘awake’, meaning total awareness, connectedness or ‘oneness’ to the very present moment.
Most of us, myself included, are not as awake as we should be and often spend the day being on ‘auto pilot, letting things like work and tv and magazines, cloud most of our thoughts.
When was the last time you really felt at peace with yourself, full of bliss at being alive and just feeling like time had stood still? Has this ever happened at all to you? Would you like it to?
Eckhart Tolle, one of the worlds most respected spiritual authors says Waking From Sleep, is : ”One of the best books on spiritual awakening I have ever come across. An important contribution to the shift in consciousness that is happening on our planet at this time”
With a quote like this, coming from a person I really admire and have read many of his books, and listened to his life changing talks, I immediately wanted to read and see what it’s all about.
I personally believe that the more ‘awake’ people become, the better the world will be. People are less selfish, more loving and happy, and when you feel like this, it puts positive energy out into the Universe.
Meditation is the first word that springs to my mind when thinking about taking yourself away to that heightened state of self awareness.
I don’t meditate as often as I should do, but the first time that I ever did was just purely magical. It was the most incredible feeling and didn’t require any drinking or drug taking to create it! I actually cried tears of joy, realised how lucky I was to be so happy with my life and felt that I should not fear death any longer. It was a very private moment, and hard to describe but truly was amazing.
Yoga and doing sport, are also ways to achieve this heightened state, as are taking certain drugs (which I so don’t recommend!) and even having sex.
Steve Taylor, has written a fascinating book that explains what it means to be truly awake, how many different levels of being ‘awake’ there is, and how one can achieve this on a daily basis so that you spend your life much more in tune.
I found the information on the history of awakening experiences written down many years ago, by now famous poets, and musicians, truly fascinating. It’s easy to assume that people from a long time ago were primitive in every way and really perhaps did not think like this but if anything that is so false.
I believe as time has gone by, so many of us have forgotten to connect ourselves to nature and to each other. We have let our ego’s get in the way and are caught up in living a modern life, full of many distractions.
I enjoyed reading about the primal natives, otherwise known as indigenious people such as the Native American Indians and Australian Aborigines, who have been completely put down and thought of as the lowest of low in society because of their seemingly very simple lives, yet they live every day, completely immersed in this heightened and awakened state.
We can all learn many things from these people who lead a much happier life than us most of the time when they are allowed to live on their own lands in peace. (sadly both the American Indians and Aborigines and other ‘primative’ peoples are often subjected to having their land taken away from them and are pushed into western living, often turning to drugs and alcohol and destroying their lives because they need to be in their own environments and cannot cope away from their land)
People will travel around the world, to places like India, searching for guidance on how to open up this channel, yet no one actually needs to leave their own home.
Once you understand how the mind and body connect you can try all sorts of things to have a truly amazing awakened state as often as you like!
